THESE ARE THE EARLIEST SURVIVING RULES OF GOLF, AS COMPLIED BY THE GENTELMEN GOLFERS OF LEITH, LATER THE HONOURABLE COMPANY OF EDINBURGH GOLFERS DRAFTED ON 7TH MARCH, 1744, FOR A TOURNAMENT PLAYED AT THE COURSE AT LEITH ON 2ND APRIL SAME YEAR. TEN YEARS LATER IN 1754, THE GOLFERS AT ST ANDREWS, WHO WOULD LATER BECOME THE ROYAL & ANCIENT GOLF CLUB OF ST ANDREWS, ADAPTED THESE RULES ALMOST VERBATIM FOR THEIR OWN COMPETITION.
